Zak Smith is an undoubtedly controversial character on the RPG scene, but I used to find his work interesting to read and for the most part inspiring (with the exception of Red and Pleasant Land which I found to be on the wrong side of useable). Frostbitten and Mutilated has loose ties with Vornheim and to some extent a similar purpose in offering a toolbox for outdoor adventuring in the way that Vornheim offered a toolbox for urban adventuring. In the meantime of course, sandboxes are back in fashion and so there is little that's truly new in the approach in Frostbitten and Mutilated. That being said it's inspiring in spades. When the entry for wolves or owls blow your mind, you understand that Zak's approach of making even mundane things unique conveys a very special feel. I don't know if I'll use it, but bits of it certainly. Well worth a read.
