The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie
(The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, The Last Argument of Kings)
I've been meaning to reread this for a while, and the stressful end of the summer meant I couldn't delve into any "serious" stuff. It's a slow start in The Blade Itself, but once it gets going, we begin to realise that Abercrombie's thing is to devise seemingly carboard cut-out characters and gradually bring out subtle nuances and character progress in a way you rarely see in Fantasy. The world building is quite cool as well, though gradually unveiled. I had fond memories of the trilogy, and it stands a reread even if a bit more concision at times would have been welcome. Amongst the better "modern" fantasy series.
