L'Ombre du Pouvoir by Fabien Cerutti

L'Ombre du Pouvoir by Fabien Cerutti

This French fantasy novel came highly recommended, and since it was available in paperback for a few euros, I decided to give it a chance. It's well written, rather better than the average fare although nowhere near as delicate and structured as what Jaworski writes. The story is essentially a kind of high octane medieval Ocean's 11 and is very effective in that. The world building is a little bit more lazy in my opinion (Medieval France with added elves and dwarves...) and that occasionally broke my suspension of disbelief. Also, there's a kind of two level story, the main one in the 1340s and a secondary one (at least in this first tome) in the 1860s or thereabouts. I really didn't care for that secondary story. Its main use seemed to be to artificially create suspense at cliffhanger moments by switching eras. Still, I can't pretend I didn't enjoy reading it, so I guess this will now be filed as guilty pleasure, and I'll probably read the rest.
