For All Seasons by Henry Butler
I was mostly aware of the late Henry Butler's blues pianist carreer, but his album with Bernstein (Viper's Drag) was a fantastic surprise so when I saw these more jazzy releases at Amoeba I decided to give them a shot. It's very decent jazz trio fare, which is in itself a surprise, but it's a very American sounding production (it made me think of Brian Bromberg's albums which I always find too formatted despite the guy's talent). Ultimately, it feels like it doesn't leave Butler a lot of space to shine, and it's telling that the most interesting piece in my opinion is his solo rendition of Saint Louis Blues. Not a bad listen, but not an album that stands out.
