J'ai rendez-vous avec vous by Rodolphe Raffali & Renée Garlène

J'ai rendez-vous avec vous by Rodolphe Raffali & Renée Garlène

I love Raffali's instrumental Brassens albums, but for all the poetry and musicality he infuses in these covers, they sometimes lack vocals. I didn't hesitate for a second when I saw that his new album featured a singer. Still Brassens covers. Truth be told, they're hit and miss, but when they hit they hit hard. The best ones are the ones that talk about women, with Renée Garlène's working class singing really enhancing the text on La Complainte des Filles de Joie or similar songs. Others are maybe a bit too sweet sounding, the irony of Brassens' work lost in the sugar. Still, no regrets, half the album is really good and that's frankly more than I get on many albums.
