Midnight Diner : Tokyo Stories

Midnight Diner : Tokyo Stories

This Japanese TV series is adapted from the manga by Yarō Abe. I love the manga, so I thought I'd give this a try. The pitch is the same (unsurprisingly): it revolves around a man who keeps a tiny diner open only at night between midnight and 7 AM. He only has one dish on the menu (miso pork) but will cook anything you want provided he has the ingredients for it. Each episode centers around one particular dish and what it means to some of the customers, regulars or not. While the feel of the show is very different from the manga (the medium is the message), the heart of it is the same: these are short stories of daily lives told through the emotional attachment we have to food. It's by far the most Japanese thing I've seen in a long time, at the same time naive and charming. Highly recommended !
