Pyongyang 2017 : Useful Idiocy by Jules Le Moal

Pyongyang 2017 : Useful Idiocy by Jules Le Moal

I got this limited edition zine of Jule's North Korea photos both because I like his work and because the subject matter really intrigued me. Jules is not naive as to the limitations of his own ability to capture the country as it really is, and yet even what is not there tells us lots. I was struck by the empty avenues and the omnipresent cult of personality, but also by the everyday scenes that show that North Korea is not as far apart from its Asian neighbours as perhaps the rulers of the country would like. Jules' photos are candid but wonderfully composed, a mix of moody black and white and more vivid colours. Great little book, both if you enjoy photography and if you're curious about North Korea.
