Orbital Blues

Orbital Blues

I don't buy many new RPGs these days, but Orbital Blues kinda caught my eye when I went through Orc's Nest in February, and we got to test it last Friday with the gang. It's relatively simple and easy to handle, with a few interesting twists to the mechanic. Character creation is actually very good, and got us 5 characters with interesting bits of backstory in less than 90 minutes. The mechanics themselves are smooth although they are also a little bit boring, I find. Might have to figure out a way to tweak that. In terms of immersion, if you know you space western tropes (Firefly, Cowboy Bebop) it should be easy enough to flesh things out a bit, but while the book gives you some tools, there's no real consideration about universe building. There is a small sandbox of sorts in the book, but I wish that space had been used for a proper collaborative setting design. Still, I quite enjoyed the game and the players as well, it seems. The biggest downside is that total lack of ergonomy: no flowcharts, no easy to handle resources, and especially, no online character sheet unless you give the editor your full details. In 2023 that's kind of unforgiveable...
