The Amazing Bud Powell, volume 2 by Bud Powell

The Amazing Bud Powell, volume 2 by Bud Powell

Apart from his name and the fact that he was an important pianist of the 60s jazz era, I knew next to nothing about Bud Powell. This record found in a flea market seemed like a good opportunity to fill in the knowledge gap. And Powell is indeed a "amazing" pianist as the title says. Fluid lines, harmonic inventiveness but not to the point of inaudibility (my ears are sensitive to too much "out") and a good dynamic band backing him here. I am less keen on the album's format, which mixes alternate takes with originals in the playing order, which makes it a really irritating album to listen to all the way through. Oh well, that'll teach me to buy collectors' items.
