Ton-Ton Macoute by Johnny Jenkins

Ton-Ton Macoute by Johnny Jenkins

I first heard the cover of I Walk on Gilded Splinters that opens this record some years back in a Parisian café, and jotted it down for later exploration. Only recently did I get to hear the full album. It's an interesting, if imperfect, album, and actually has a bit of a history: Johnny Jenkins was an established if low key blues guy in the 60s, and his lable put together young southern musicians, including most of the early line-up of the soon to be formed Allman Brothers Band to back him on a record that was heavily marketed and likely not what Jenkins wanted to do. Still, the record has its charms, it's raw and gutsy, and unsurprisingly, Duane Allman's slide guitar is tasteful as hell. Not a must-have record, but certainly worth lending an ear to.
