The Yellow Book of Brechewold

The Yellow Book of Brechewold

I bought this on a whim while at the Valet de Coeur in Montreal last summer, and forgot it in a bag until earlier this week. It's nominally a sandboxy campaign setting for Lamentations of the Flame Princess, but I'm not sure it's that good of a fit with the few things I've read or played from LotFP. It's not as grim, nowhere near as provocative and in fact rather whimsical in tone. Also, it's very light on mechanics. All this is good news for me because if I decided to use this (and I very well might) it would not be with LotFP. The Yellow Book of Brechewold is set in a sorcery school in mythical Britain, and its primary influences seem to be Harry Potter and Arthurian Myth. Flavour wise, it's rather a good blend, and certainly makes me want to delve into it with players. I described it above as "sandboxy" and while there are elements of sandbox design in it, the reality is that most of it is a megadungeon, but when well designed those tend to be sandboxy, hence my use of the word. Despite flavour and great ideas and concepts, the book is very low on useability with a large number of blind spots when it comes to how you're supposed to use this. The PCs are expected to be students and furthermore expected to be exploring the dungeon under the school, but neither of these things are all that well fleshed out. If you want to run this, you're going to have to work a bit to make it all fit together. Again, not a big issue for me, but it may very well be one for people who like things easy to use or for those who like to run by the book (I get the sense that mechanics, monster stats, etc. are of the fast and loose variety...) So a win in my book, but I can easily see how this would not be for everyone, and mostly not for die hard fans of LotFP's usual "edgy" vibe.
