Les Rats de Montsouris by Léo Malet
I went back to this Nestor Burma novel that I read 35 years ago when I first delved into Leo Malet as a teenager. The primary reason was a mention in Gilles Thomas' Les Catacombes about scenes under the 14th arrondissement. I didn't remember anything about the plot, and to be honest, like most of Malet's novels, it's not plot driven. It's the vivid description of post-war Paris and its different social strata that really makes this engrossing, as well as the poetic and slang-y language. But there is a nice, action packed, concluding scene in the Montsouris reservoirs, so I did get what I had come for. This has spurred me on to delve into the Burma back catalog, which I am now in the process of reading.
