The Samurai Detectives vol 2 by Shotaro Ikenami
I had thoroughly enjoyed the first collection of loosely connected short stories set in 19th century Edo (now Tokyo). It's clever, light-hearted and so very Japanese. In this second volume we gradually see that there is something obsessive, and occasionally disturbing, about old Kohei's constant meddling in others' affairs. And while, of course, this is the fuel for the detective side of the narrative, what is says about human relationships is much more interesting. Just as engrossing as the first installment, and I see the third is our, so I'll soon latch on to that.
