God's Gonna Cut You Down by Frank Catalano /& Jimmy Chamberlin
The thing about record stores is that they allow you to discover stuff you've never even heard of. That store in Bordeaux had a "4th CD free" offer, and I'd found three. I told the guy I was looking for something groovy, he played the beginning of the opener, 'Shakin' to me, and I was hooked. This album isn't wildly original, but it's all I like in a Jimmy Smith style record: greasy organ, raucous sound, heavy drumming and a saxophone that doesn't get too virtuoso. The album's a winner from start to finish.
