I thought I would never get a chance to see the current incarnation Stanton Moore's jazz trio live, and what do you know the day I come to Paris they're playing at the Duc. I was first in line, first seated just off the stage, and took it all in in its glorious groove. Obviously you expect Stanton to take the front seat in a gig like that, and there were rather a lot of drum moments, but Stanton's groove is such that his solos never get abstract. The beat is always there, even if it's at the edge of perception. More importantly, he was more than generous giving the amazingly versatile David Torkanowski on piano and the wonderfully hip and groovy James Singleton on bass their share of moments to shine. The gig was captivating from start to finish, and if I hadn't been with friends and wanting to chat, I would have stayed for the second, later gig as well. Superb.
