Savage Season by Joe R. Lansdale

Savage Season by Joe R. Lansdale

I started this series on the recommendations of Cédric. He pitched it as darkly funny, and although it took me a while to find the funny, the dark hit me from the start. Hap & Leonard are two friends, one white, one black, one straight, one gay. They get involved in criminal activities and occasionally end up solving crimes through most unconventional means. I wasn't sure where this first installment was going until three quarters into the book things suddenly blew up in my face (it's a short book) and the nervous takes over from the languor of the disenfrenchised South. The atmosphere reminded me of James Lee Burke's Louisiana novels, but thankfully here the depressive is balanced by Lansdale's humorous cynicism. A good start to a great series.
