The Magicians by Lev Grossman

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

The promise of this book was a kind of darker, more mature Harry Potter: it's set in a magic school and the hero is an unassuming magician. That's where the symmetry stops actually, the main inspiration, or maybe rather plot point for this book comes from CS Lewis. Ultimately though, while eminently readable, this mostly focuses on whiny teenagers who don't know what to do with their lives (let alone their amazing powers). The parts of the book set at school are entertaining enough, but the last third is really cringe-worthy. Not all bad, but not something I can heartily recommend. (Actually read this on in early summer but had forgotten to review it).
