Princess Bride by William Goldman

Princess Bride by William Goldman

This is my 4th or 5th reading of Princess Bride, and like each of the previous times, it's just a marvel to read. Having seen the movie again recently, I see the extreme simplification it went through better (I still love it, that's not the issue.) In particular, the meta part of the book (Goldman's comments on his relation to the book, the parts he excised, etc.) is deliciously ironic and probably hard to grasp for the young audience that the movie appears to be targeted at. It adds a welcome touch of cynicism to the rosy core story. And Goldman's humor is simply awesome (I'd forgotten about the whole part with Stephen King in the 25th anniversary edition addition to the book. It had me in stitches...) Another thing I didn't necessarily perceive in my previous readings is how much Princess Bride is about the enduring power of fairy tales. As a deep lover of folk tales in all their forms, this touches me in a particular way, I think.
