Top Photographer 2016

Top Photographer 2016

I watched the 5 webepisodes of this mini photography contest based on Top Chef and similar TV staples. I'll be upfront about this: it's not a good series. It's tacky, it completely fails to establish any human connection with the candidates (which is why we'll watch people cook weird dishes, etc.) and (ultimate sin in my view) it narrows the field of photography to fashion/people, essentially. Sure, there's one single episode when they shoot a cityscape from the top of the Empire State Building, but it feels like it was tacked on just to be able to say that it was photography in general. Having said that, it does prove that the format could work if it took a bit more time to establish the contestants as people, and if it took a broader view of photography (eliminating a guy who does street because he couldn't shoot fashion is ridiculous...)
