Kashgar by Marcus Taylor
Full disclosure, Marcus is a good friend and the guitarist from my first band 7th Hour. Like Ben Bell (keyboards from that same band) he has stuck to music much more seriously than I ever did and Kashgar is his first self produced album. Listening to it I realise not only how good he's become, but also how good you can make an album sound even though you recorded it in your home office (I'm guessing). Genre-wise, Kashgar could best be described as ethnic jazzy rock. It's not out enough to be jazz rock, but the jazz influences are undeniable. It's a little like a Santana instrumental album but instead of a latino influence it's got an indian one. And it's really good stuff. My only gripe is the occasional use of konnacol or vocal percussions. I love how this sounds when Trilok Gurtu does it, but Marcus hasn't quite mastered it to the point of it sounding right. Still, this is an impressive piece of work and well worth a listen.
