The Marcus King Band by The Marcus King Band

Once in a while, an amazon music recommendation will seem intriguing enough that I'll want to try it out. Such was The Marcus King Band, Marcus King's second album. The guest presence of Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes (on one track each) were unexpected bonuses, but honestly the album shines without them. King, despite his young age, achieves a blend of southern rock and soul that at the same time harkens back to the fabled days of Muscle Shoals and sounds eminently modern. His guitar stylings are very reminiscent of Derek Trucks' phrasings, but sound divine, so who cares. His high strained voice soars above it all. Probably the best new album I've heard so far in 2017.
