Le Coeur des Vivants by Les Doigts de l'Homme

This latest album was a long wait (the band took a sabbatical) but boy was it worth it. The previous release (Mumbo Jumbo) was a departure from  manouche jazz, but felt a little bit like a timid gesture. Le Coeur des Vivants is a true departure, and the writing shines here as a consequence: gypsy jazz is a pretty narrow field of experimentation, and while previous (and excellent) albums had brought in humour and wackyness, it wasn't a sustainable musical journey. Le Coeur des Vivants reminds me at times of the fabled Guitar Trio, at times of Renaud Garcia-Fons's Oriental Bass, at times of Spanish rock band El Bicho, but mostly, it sounds like Les Doigts de l'Homme going somewhere new. Really great musicianship and writing, wonderful vibe, already on heavy rotation.
