The Coldest City by Johnston and Hart

I really like spy thrillers, but so many of them are repetitive clichés. The Coldest City isn't. Set in 1989 just as the Berlin Wall is about to collapse, it's the story of an English spy sent to recover a list of western spies that could fall into the hands of the soviets following the death of the agent who carried it. It is deliciously intricate, with multiple explanations as to what is happening opening up each time one is closed. You (the reader) are left in the dark, and that's just how I love it. A special mention for Sam Hart's stark black and whites, not a style often used (it reminded me of Comès a bit). I'm a big fan of Queen & Country, with the only drawback being that the graphical approach often belies the darkness of the stories. No such discrepancy here. Well worth checking out.
