Golden Boy by Watermelon Slim
This was an impulse purchase on the basis of a few seconds of the first track heard in a record store. Despite a few really gritty blues tracks, it's not just a blues albums: quite a few Irish ballads in there too, which makes this more of an Americana record, I suppose. Who cares though, it's good! Watermelon Slim's deep gravelly voice is obviously ideal for the dirty blues he does here, but it works just as well on the other material. You can smell the whisky in the record. Production values are good: clean but not too clean, and just the sparseness the material needs. Altogether a nice discovery.
