Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
I had a passing acquaintance with Norse Myths before I read this, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Gaiman rewrites the old legends in a modern yet poetic style. I have no idea how selective the choice of stories is, but their continuity works very well indeed. A delightful book which (I guess) won't be of much interest to those who are already fans of Odin, Thor, Loki and their ilk, but for me it was just an amazingly evocative read.
