Concrete Stories by Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze
I had flipped through some of RJL's previous books on Hong Kong, and while the photos (mostly architectural) were stunning, I felt they were cold as well and didn't reflect the soul of city I've grown to love. In Concrete Stories, Romain not only brings in this extra bit of depth that I find vital in a photo book, but he embraces the verticality of the city, something I'm very aware of and find extremely hard to capture convincingly. The starting point for the photographer here is that everything is captured from above (terraces mostly, maybe a drone here and there ?) but the human element is always present. As a result these are not just superb representations of the vertical geography of Hong Kong but they're all stories within stories as well. Truly fantastic book !
