Sherlock Season 4

Sherlock S4

I have a wary relation with Sherlock, which I loved at the beginning then turned sour on when it went south (quite quickly in S2), then rejoined later. It's easier now that I know not to expect too much. And indeed, Season 4 was in this respect much like the previous ones: some great stuff, some truly horrible stuff of the "what were they thinking" variety. Generally the big shift in this season is that we are no longer focused on cases. Sherlock has become a sort of dysfunctional sitcom with Holmes and Watson as the core characters and a cast of regulars around them. There's still sleuthing, of course, but it's more a character quirk of Sherlock than anything else now, and when cases are taken on, it's because it's serves the dysfunctional relationship. I kind of like the change, the one episode, one case thing was becoming unsustainable anyway. The first two episodes are strong on this formula, with some pretty poignant moments. And then the third episode is back in WTF territory, full of implausible ridiculousness and resolved in an even more ridiculous fashion. Oh well.
