The Final Table

The Final Table

My son loves cooking shows, and I watched this one with him (my wife watched the first two episodes and didn't like the format). The great thing about the Final Table is that it embraces the diversity of food cultures in a way that I haven't seen in any other cooking competition shows before. Each episode focuses on one country, asking the candidates to revisit a classic national dish of that country and then to cook using one ingredient native to that country. What it lacks (but I guess that would have been too expensive) is for each installment to actually be located in that country. It would be awesome to see candidates getting their ingredients in local food markets rather than in a pantry. Still, there's a lot of good stuff in there, the level of competition is awesome (to see starred chefs in a competition like this is kind of unique). The one who won in the end was not the one we expected to win, but that's OK too. Not perfect, but enjoyable, I would watch another season.
