His Dream of the Skyland by Anne Opotowski and Aya Morton

Ever since moving to Asia, I have more awareness of art in various media that relates to Asia, so when I saw this graphic novel set in Hong Kong, I decided to give it a go. It's a very poetic and dreamy opus, wonderfully drawn. It tells the story of a young man in the 1920s who discovers and starts to explore the Walled City of Kowloon. It is of course entirely fictitious since the Walled City only became a place where refugees and illegals gathered after WW2, but who cares? His Dream of the Skyland is the first installment of a three part story set in a fantasised Hong Kong that we can all relate to. A wonderful, engrossing graphic novel.
