Hokusai by Shotaro Ishinomori
This manga explores the life (or rather moments in the life) of Hokusai, probably the most famous classical Japanese painter. It depicts a fascinating and at the same time fractured man. A man who changed his name several times in order to be able to reinvent himself and find success on the merits of his work, not his name. A man who until the end strived to renew his art. A man also who enjoyed probably a bit too much the company of women attracted to his fame. The story here isn't linear, and the style of drawing is rather quaint (it reminded me of Tezuka who was a contemporary of Ishinomori) but the story is compelling.
