Ray

Ray

I had throrougly enjoyed Ray the first time I saw it a decade ago. Undoubtedly this was due to Jamie Foxx's masterful impersonation of a young Ray Charles. Watching it again however, led me to a slightly less enthusiastic take. Foxx's Ray is still as stunning as ever, but the movie itself has huge pacing issues. It struggles to create momentum, and then fails to keep that momentum going. There are really strong moments, to be sure, but the movie as a whole doesn't really work, I fear. The ending in particular manages to be both super heavy handed and fizzle out completely. Still, it's worth seeing for the music and for Jamie Foxx, but is not the masterpiece I thought I remembered.
