The Gospel Truth / Soul Hits / McCanna by Les McCann
This trio of 63/64 albums by Les McCann are so good I wonder how I never heard them before. The Gospel Truth in particular cuts to the core of Gospel influenced jazz, a little bit like Phineas Newborn's Harlem Blues, but more on the nose. I love it though, soulful as hell (or heaven as the case may be). Soul Hits has a slightly different vibe since Joe Pass is along for the ride. Equally soulful, but slightly less gospel-y sounding. McCanna is more of the same, but honestly the three are a delight to listen to.
