The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)
I had no idea what to expect with this, and it is a strange beast. I don't know how accurate the connection is, but I had flashes of The Squid and the Whale, which I otherwise barely remember. Anyway, this one is the story of a dysfunctional family as the patriarch (masterful Hoffman) slowly ages. Stiller and Sandler are really good in their respective roles, proving if needed that they can shift from comedy to drama at the drop of a hat. While the female roles are a little less prominent, Elizabeth Marvel is quite stunning as the forgotten sister, and Emma Thompson surprisingly convincing as the hippy but scheming mother in law. The pacing is a little odd, and the editing even more so, with scenes cut mid-sentence and such deliberate disconnects. Not sure that adds to the movie, but I found it enjoyable anyway.
