La Section Rythmique by Blenkhorn, Girardot and Nouaux
Perusing the jazz shelves at Gibert in Paris a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon the second album by La Section Rythmique, a trio of jazz players who made their name backing bigger names than themselves. This second album explored hard bop apparently, but there was a reference to a first album centered on New Orleans jazz. So I got that instead. And boy, was it a good pick! Superb instrumental covers of New Orleans classics like Buddy Bolden's Blues or Saint James Infirmary. A very up front double bass, superb guitar work (at times electric, and at times nylon string acoustic) and generally a fantastic vibe. I've listened to it easily 10 times since I got it and I'm not tiring of it. Highly recommended. Incidentally, I feel like it's one of those genuinely jazz albums that may please non jazz listeners as well.
