Diplomatie
This movie had been on the DVD pile for a few years, and for some reason we never got to watch it. The first twenty minutes, mostly in German with no subtitles were a little be offputting although I suggested to my wife that it was probably to force immersion. After that, the face to face between Von Scholtitz (Nils Arestrup) and Consul Nordling, the former determined to raze Paris to the ground as the Nazis flee the approaching allies and the latter trying his best to convince him not to, is stunningly well acted and very compelling. I was already aware of this crucial episode of French history, having read and seen 'Is Paris Burning?' (Paris Brûle-t'il ?), but even though the movie takes some liberties with history the story resonates deeply. Highly recommended.
