Le Dernier Lapon by Olivier Truc

Le Dernier Lapon by Olivier Truc

An effective though far from revolutionary thriller that fascinates especially because of its description of the sami culture, the native Lapps, but a small minority that struggles to keep its identity in the larger scandinavia. Two crimes are commited: first, the theft of a Lapp artefact, then the murder of a reindeer herder. The Reindeer Police (Klemet an old lapp cop and Nina, a young Norwegian recruit) follow the leads to an old mystery that has modern repercussions. The plot isn't hugely original, but Truc's writing is effective and immersive. The book really shines because of its cultural setting more than anything. A good light read.
