Lucifer by Mike Carey and various artists Issues #1-75
Lucifer is an offshoot of Neil Gaiman's Sandman in more ways than one : not only is the main character a Sandman character, but it's an ambitious run of 75 issues that tackles complex metaphysical issues and yet manages to remain interesting and compelling all the way through. The art, as with Sandman, is iffy at first (to say the least, some issues are downright ugly) but gets gradually better over time without ever reaching laudable heights. Ultimately, it's the sheer ambition of Lucifer that blows my mind, the pulling of so many mythological and esoteric threads into a somewhat coherent whole, with a strong start, a powerful middle and an expected but satisfying ending. Really good stuff, prime inspiration for any modern occult RPGs. Highly recommended.
