The Sandman Companion by Hy Bender
I'm usually not the kind of guy who likes to know how the sausage is made. I actually like some mystery, the magic of lost references, etc. But Sandman is such a rich tapestry that a decade a go or so I bought and read The Sandman Companion. I had forgotten all about it, but after I read Sandman again I stumbled upon it and decided to reread it. It's a really good read, full of little details and anecdotes, long interviews with Gaiman about each of the 10 sandman arcs. Obviously you have to be a true diehard fan to even want to read this, but if you are I strongly recommend it.
