Zone Blanche Season 1 (Black Spot)
This French crime/thriller TV series is available on Netflix and came recommended by a few friends. If you read my Cultural Consumptions you know that I don't have a very high opinion of French TV series, but Zone Blanche is very close to a masterpiece, and not just by the standards of French TV. It is set in a fictional rural town in the Vosges mountains where mobile coverage is patchy, hence the name of the series. Surrounded by a majestic and creepy forest, we follow the Major (chief of the local gendarmerie) and her small team as they investigate increasingly troubling crimes in the area. As the first season unfolds, we understand more about the backstories of the maire, his father, and the chief of police herself. My son described it last night as a mix of Longmire and Stranger Things set in France and it's a good description. I very strongly recommend it (and since it's on Netflix, you don't have to speak French to enjoy it, subtitled or dubbed.)
