Glow Season 3

Glow Season 3

This third season of the surprise hit Netflix show Glorious Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) is an unusual cultural object. The first two seasons worked because of the unlikely combination of drama amongst a cast of failed actresses learning to wrestle and action from said wrestling. Season 2 ended with a surprise twist : the network's duplicitous execs axed the show, but it was picked up for a live-action run in Vegas. The repetitive nature of a live-action show is dealt with swiftly : beyond the first episode of Season 3, you see virtually no wrestling. Instead, the focus is on a slow build up of drama as the characters stare into the numbing repetitiveness and artistic vacuity of their work. Some grow from it, others shrink. I didn't binge S3 because there's little in terms of narrative threads to push you forward. But I enjoyed it a lot nonetheless, and am looking forward to the final season, which promises something different again.
