Cloud Atlas

I read the novel just about when the movie was released but had never seen the movie until last weekend. That's now done. On the plus side, the technical mastery here is astounding. Not in the flashy effects of the futuristic parts, but in the transition between the periods, in the multiple roles of the lead cast, in the sheer grandness of it all. On the minus side the "message" of the movie (be good to one another) is both a little heavy handed and a little underwhelming. Still, the five or six periods are linked together in a way that I found more convincing than in the novel (which had a distinct WTF feel to it at the end). Still, it's a bit on the long side. So not a glorious success, but worth having seen once at least.
