Poetry in Motion by Soul Rebels Brass Band
The Soul Rebels have always occupied a space of their own in the New Orleans brass scene. More influenced by soul and RnB than by jazz, not as nasty (in a good sense) as Rebirth, not as in your face funky as Hot 8 but still, undeniably New Orleans. I'm not hearing that in this latest overproduced guest-laden extravaganza. My guess is they wanted to do a hip hop album, but I feel they've lost their identity. When Galactic invited a bunch of rappers on From the Corner to the Block, they blended those guys into the Galactic sound. Here I feel like the Soul Rebels' sound is lost. A dissapointment for me.
