Kaijumax 1 by Zander Cannon
If I had to list comics that are absolutely not what I expected them to be based on cover and name, Kaijumax would be all the way up there. Like me you probably expect stories of godzilla like monsters, and while that would not be inaccurate on the face of it, Kaijumax is really a story about incarceration. Set in a high security prison island for 10-storey monsters, Kaijumax explores all the tropes of the genre: corrupt guards on the take, inmate gangs, drugs, etc. After the initial surprise and the apparent discrepency betwen the cartoonish style and the dark theme, I found an engrossing story with deep characters, great world-building and inmate slang galore (which I love).
