Ra by Utopia
Much as I like progressive rock, I have only scratched the surface. I recently heard Les Claypool mention this album in an interview and decided to give it a try. Generally I find that US prog from the 70s was a lot more straightforward than UK prog at the same time. As if they got the codes but applied them as a rulebook rather than inspiration. Utopia's Ra certainly is in that vein. It's quite pleasant to listen to, loads of moog, early synth, great guitar. Also, the obligatory epic track, here an open parody of pastoral / fairytale prog complete with instrumental focus on each of the bandmembers. Overall though it lacks depth, I find which means that to me it might not have much staying power.
