The White House Sessions 1962 by Bennett / Brubeck

The White House Sessions 1962 by Bennett / Brubeck

While not deliberately misleading, this album was not what I thought it would be. I expected Tony Bennett singing with the Dave Brubeck Quartet which I thought would be an interesting collision. In fact it's a short set by the Brubeck Quartet followed by a long set with Tony Bennet with Brubeck taking over on the piano for a few tracks at the end. Both sets are fine though. Brubeck and his quartet are rather more modern and experimental sounding than I expected, and while Bennett is himself, I find that velvet voice and the sparse but lush arrangements that support it rather irresistible. He's the only crooner I like, and so this is a fine record, even if not what I thought it'd be.
