Un Long Voyage by Claire Duvivier
I can't remember which of my friends recommended this to me, but it was a fantastic recommendation. A fantasy novel that eschews a lot of the tropes you expect from fantasy (virtually no action, a slow pace, very low fantasy but not gritty...) I felt some clear Le Guin influences in this book, and not only because the first half is set on a archipelago. That said, it stands on its own perfectly. The book is a first hand account of the life of young and brilliant state functionary Malvine Zélina de Féralasie by her personal secretary. The prose is delightful, both free flowing and colourful. I just loved the book to bits and will definitely be on the lookout for anything else Claire Duvivier writes.
