A Bout de Souffle by Martial Solal
When Solal passed away, I heard numerous references to this 1960 movie soundtrack and decided to give it a listen. In the wake of Miles Davis' 1958 soundtrack to Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud, jazz was in high demand in the French movie industry (in fact, one of my earliest jazz CDs was Barney Wilen's soundtrack to the 1959 Un Témoin dans la Ville). While the jazz component of A Bout de Souffle is undeniably great, I don't think it stands as a record, unlike Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud. The tracks are short, and never really get enough development to go deed. It's cinematic, but not something I'd enjoy listening outside of the movie (which I still haven't seen...)
