Inner City Blues by Ammari-B and Brüno

Inner City Blues by Ammari-B and Brüno

Apart from his uninspired erotic graphic novels, I think I have loved every single book by Brüno that I own. Not only do I find his graphic style fantastic and distinctive, I also love the way his characters occupy the space they are given in their respective stories. I hadn't read Inner City Blues in ages, it's a mix of Starsky & Hutch and Shaft in terms of influences, focused on the criminal underworld of Inner City. Of course, the title refers to Marvin Gaye's famous political track at the end of "What's Goin On". All the narrative tropes of the 70s are there, but the story and its framing are really well structured, with three chapters that partially overlap narratively with different viewpoints. Really good stuff.
