Just So Happens by Fumio Obata
At first I thought this was an autobiographical story, but since the lead character Yumiko is female and the author is male, that's unlikely. There's no doubt in my mind though, that Just so happens draws on personal experience. Much has been made of the disconnect expats experience when moving into a new country with a very different culture (Lost in Translation has even become something of a generic term for this), but here Obata explores the disconnection that an expat (Japanese in the case of Yumiko) when she goes back home for her fathers' funeral. The story is slow paced and subtle, beautifully drawn and quite moving.
