Despite my appetite for crime novels and the fact that it doesn't take much for me to give such a book a go, I had never read any Fred Vargas (one of the most popular contemporary crime novelist in France.) This one was recommended for having an interesting take on Parisian history, and indeed it does. It was a very pleasant read and although the plot is probably excessively convoluted to be truly believable, at least the rest falls in place nicely, with no improbable coincidences delivering the solution or massive leap of reasoning illuminating the lead character. Certainly a very good inspiration for Les Mystères de Paris, my RPG set in Paris. I don't know that I will necessarily hunt down other Vargas books, but if I get an opportunity, who knows.
